One Last Flight: The Night Hawk Race Announces Its Final Year

Feb. 24, 2026 by Shari "Border Hawk" Hicks

After much deliberation we have decided that we are ready to hang up our hats as race directors. We have really enjoyed all the years that we put on the Night Hawk. We have had the pleasure of seeing so many runners tackle their first distance, reach their goals or help lift others up along the way (sometimes literally!) We have fond memories from each year that we will carry with us. We hope you do too.

We would like to thank everyone that has been a part of the Night Hawk over the past 11 years. Our first year we had more volunteers than runners! I think people were excited about the new race and so willing to come help. We’ve had rain, floods, storms, bugs and of course heat and humidity. Through it all we always had a great support system of volunteers, awesome runners and came away with memories that will last a lifetime.

2026 will be our final year and we are changing things up. We have decided we are going to hold a “fatass” instead of a race that you have to sign up and pay for. We will provide aid from 7pm – 10 pm on June 27 th . We will provide burgers, hot dogs and chips along with some beer and soda. With a fatass you typically bring something to share like a potluck; cookies, snacks, whatever you feel like sharing. There will be no timing, just running. We have arranged to have a photographer from Mile 90 there to capture our final hurrah. This is still a great way to get in some miles on the trails at night if you are training for the Hawk. This is part of the reason we built this race. We hope that we see lots of familiar faces as we bid farewell to our Night Hawk race! That being said, if there are any folks that are interested in becoming race directors and would like to take over the Night Hawk, we would be happy to help you! We have notes, schedules and information to share. If you think this might be for you let us know!
